Mission
Our mission is to nurture students intellectually,
spiritually, morally, socially, and physically. We encourage
the children in our diversified student body to reach their full
academic potential. Particular emphasis is placed on helping
students develop self-esteem, respect for others, and personal
responsibility.
History
In 1867, the Shrine of the Sacred Heart Parish was established. A
school, staffed by the Sisters of Mercy, was opened in a small
frame building near the church for the children of the parish. In
1916, when the present church was erected, the basement was divided
into four classrooms, allowing the original school building to
be demolished. On May 10, 1959, the present school building
was dedicated and consists of eight classrooms, auditorium-gym
combination, a computer lab, office, kitchen facilities, teachers'
room, and storage rooms. In 2003, The Dr. William Meyers,
DDS wing was open. This new addition houses the Pre-Kindergarten,
Kindergarten classrooms, a multi-purpose Art Room, and a new
Library, which is dedicated in the memory of Rachael and S. Edward
Kearns. Mr. and Mrs. Kearns were former parishioners of
The Shrine. Mr. Kearns, who was ninety-two years young
when he died, was in the last graduating class from the original
classrooms in the church undercroft.
Grades Pre-Kindergarten to 4 is self-contained. Grades
5-8 are departmentalized. Presently, professional lay teachers
and the Sisters of Mercy staff the school. Courses such
as art, music, library, computers, Spanish, and physical education
are incorporated into the curriculum and taught by teachers trained
in those specialties.
This school is an integral participant in the parish community
through liturgies, sacramental programs, clergy instruction,
and financial assistance. Rich in the educational tradition
established by the Sisters of Mercy in 1867, The Shrine looks
with pride at its past as it prepares children for the challenges
of the new millennium.
