School Hours and Attendance
Regular school attendance and punctuality are essential for good scholastic progress. The school day begins at 7:50AM and ends at 2:55PM. Schoolwork continues even though your child is absent. “Making-up” the work can never replace the teacher-pupil interaction that occurred while the subject matter was being taught. Parents are urged to see that their children are in school at all times unless they are ill. Students who are absent from school must bring a note written by the parent or guardian stating the dates and reasons for the absence. When a student is absent, the school office must be notified by telephone by 9:00AM.
Any student absent 5 days or more must obtain a doctor’s written release to return to school. In case of extended illness or hospitalization, please notify the school office. Students absent with long-term illness must contact the county or city home teaching program.
If a child accumulates absences of 25 or more days within the school year a conference will be called between the principal, teacher, and parent. At this time a review of the student’s records will occur to determine if retention is necessary.
After an extended absence, the middle school (grades 5 to 8) student has one week to make up work in all subjects unless otherwise directed by a teacher. It is the responsibility of the student to note the assignments given during the absence. All work not handed in on the date due will result in a lower grade for the assignment. The teacher will not accept any work handed in one or more weeks late. Parents should note that this policy pertains to work missed due to an extended absence. All assignments are due on the date given. The teacher may refuse to accept any assignment not turned in on time.
Shrine of the Sacred Heart School does not assume responsibility for the academic progress of any student who misses school because of family vacations. Parents who request vacation for their children over and above what is provided within the school calendar, must assume responsibility for the work that is missed. These trips are not included under the heading of excused absence, even though prior arrangements may have been made. Teachers are not to be asked to provide assignments before leaving for vacation nor should they be expected to check assignments upon the student’s return. Teachers are under no obligation to alter course requirements such as assignments and/or tests to accommodate vacation times. Tests missed during the student’s absence are to be made up at the teacher’s convenience.
For 8th grade students only, a maximum of 3 days for shadowing at high schools is permitted. Students will not be marked absent on these days as long as the homeroom teacher receives a note from the parent or guardian in advance. High Schools may question poor attendance records and decide not to accept students who have been absent or tardy many times.
